Detroit Police final week raided the town’s first “psychedelic church,” operated by Soul Tribes, which presents psilocybin mushrooms as a holy sacrament, the Detroit Metro Times studies. The raid got here days after the Metro Times revealed a canopy story concerning the church.

Proprietor Shaman Shu believes the raid violates Proposal E, which was authorized by voters final yr and decriminalized the possession of entheogenic crops and fungi, together with psilocybin mushrooms, within the metropolis. The church features a “sacrament middle” which sells dried psilocybin mushrooms, capsules, and gummies.

In line with a search warrant obtained by the Metro Occasions, the motion included the seizure of all narcotics, together with “psychedelic mushrooms” from the “unlawful dispensary contained in the purported church” together with “all books, data, receipts, notes, ledgers, and different papers regarding the procurement, distribution, storage, and transportation of managed substances.”

Shu advised the Metro Occasions that officers seized greater than $700,000 in psilocybin mushrooms supposed for therapeutic use and ordered the church’s closure. Below Proposal E, therapeutic use of entheogenic crops and fungi was additionally decriminalized

“They stole historic sacrament. It was prayed over and meditated over. It’s a therapeutic sacrament… They blocked my property down with out due course of. You’ll be able to’t try this. … They assume we’re not a church. However that’s why the federal authorities was created, to separate church and state in order that cities don’t opine on what church buildings are [and] what ministries are. We’re a ministry and a non secular group.” — Shu to the Metro Tims

Detroit Police Division Sgt. for Media Relations Jordan Corridor advised the Metro Occasions that the raid “was as a result of a scarcity of licensing and the quantity of gear that have been distributed.”

Mayor Mike Duggan’s workplace advised the Metro Occasions that “It’s the legislation division’s place that this native ordinance, regardless of its intent, doesn’t override state legislation, which considers psilocybin to be a managed substance” and that “the town ordinance itself doesn’t enable for the sale or distribution of psilocybin.”
