Illustration: kentoh / Depositphotos The ability to access capital is a critical component for most businesses, but for those in the cannabis industry, it can be especially difficult. Despite the increasing social acceptance and legalization of cannabis in states across the country (and countries around the world), companies in the cannabis sector continue to face significant challenges when it comes to securing funding. The biggest hurdle these businesses face remains federal cannabis prohibition, which often prompts risk-averse lenders to shy away from providing the crucial funding for sustained growth and success. Under federal law, any financial transaction involving cannabis-related businesses—even…
In a statement released last week, Steve Williams, the current mayor of Huntington and Democratic candidate for governor of West Virginia, said he would support a voter referendum to legalize cannabis in the state, The Inter-Mountain reports. His opponent, Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, said legalizing cannabis is not the answer to the state’s substance use disorder crisis. “West Virginia has an opportunity to join the growing number of states, including Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., that have taken bold steps to legalize cannabis, and I believe it’s time we give the people a voice on this issue. One avenue…

We were experiencing many of the same issues as several other states were having. Many of the states realized that we…
A new study on the impact of marijuana consumption on people’s use of other drugs suggests that for many, cannabis may act as a less-dangerous substitute, allowing people to reduce their intake of substances such as alcohol, methamphetamine and opioids like morphine. The survey, of 23,500 people in New Zealand, asked participants about whether their use of cannabis had any influence on their consumption of other substances. For the most part, it found that marijuana use was associated with reduced frequency and quantity of use of other certain substances. “Significant proportions reported cannabis use led to ‘less’ alcohol (60%), synthetic…
Illustration: dencg / Shutterstock In most industries, companies in Europe and the United States see eye to eye and have an interdependent relationship. In the brief history of the cannabis industry, however, this has not been the case. While the U.S. recreational market has grown steadily over the past decade, European countries have taken a much slower and more methodical approach heavily focused on medical programs, public safety, and inhibiting the illicit market. With a strict regulatory environment, a growing number of medical research projects, and the involvement of pharmaceutical companies, European countries have established strong medical programs and only…

A new Arizona rule allowing cannabis dispensaries to provide delivery services for adult-use customers took effect on Friday, AZFamily reports. The new rules require customers who are seeking adult-use cannabis delivery to set up the service in person, verifying they are old enough to purchase cannabis products, and then they can place orders online. Additionally, because the customers are pre-verified, delivery drivers must give all deliveries directly to the customers who placed the order — the deliveries cannot be left with an acquaintance or at someone’s doorstep or porch, according to the report. The rules were implemented months earlier than…
