Illustration: Andy.LIU / Shutterstock Voters in five states saw cannabis-related measures on their ballots in 2024, but only one of the measures passed. The path to change was especially challenging this year. In October, the Arkansas Supreme Court declared the state’s medical marijuana expansion measure “misleading” and prohibited counting the votes. While Nebraska voters approved their two related medical marijuana measures by 70.74 and 66.95 percent, a lawsuit over ballot-access signatures is expected to reach the Nebraska Supreme Court, where it could delay or negate the will of the voters. Nearly 6 million people voted to legalize recreational cannabis in…
Seven cannabis transport companies are suing the Illinois Department of Agriculture claiming that the agency’s licensing process favors larger white- and male-owned companies, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The plaintiffs – ACC of Illinois Transportation, Runway Logistics Services, Hands to Heart, Reliavan, Fade Express, Piff Patch, and Moetta’s Transports – are majority-owned by women and/or minorities. The lawsuit takes aim at custom “quickie” transporter license applications opened by the agriculture department in July 2021. Those applications gave lower compliance criteria to licensed medical cannabis cultivation centers and those larger companies are majority white- and male-owned. Those licenses were awarded prior to the agency…
The presidential campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris (D) said on Monday that Harris would federally legalize cannabis if she wins the election. The announcement came via an update to the campaign agenda focusing on the vice president’s plan to “deliver for Black men and their families.” The five-part plan includes “Legalizing recreational marijuana and creating opportunities for Black Americans to succeed in this new industry,” according to the campaign, and the legalization policy would “break down unjust legal barriers that hold Black men and other Americans back.” During her tenure in the Senate, Harris — who as a prosecutor…
If there is one thing that cannabis opponents and responsible cannabis consumers agree on, it is that no one should operate a motor vehicle on a public roadway if they are too impaired to operate the vehicle safely. That is true for cannabis and any other substance, including pharmaceutical drugs. Cannabis DUI policies should be based on science, and not fear-mongering. Arbitrary per se THC limits, such as the recently approved 3.5 ng/mL threshold in Germany, punish longtime cannabis consumers who may have elevated metabolized THC levels, yet are not impaired at the time of testing. A study in Canada…
Illustration: DALL-E / mg Magazine Advertising in regulated markets requires more than creativity and compliance. As the industry’s footprint grows across the country, brands face the challenge of standing out in an increasingly crowded market while adapting to shifting sets of disparate regulations. To succeed in the quagmire, cannabis advertisers need strategic insight, innovative technology, and a clear understanding of what makes their brand unique. With intelligent tools that support compliance, loyalty programs that foster customer connections, and developing technologies like Web3, brands are finding better ways to resonate with their audience. Mastering local regulations One of the biggest challenges…
Americans view driving under the influence of marijuana as one of the issues they’re “least concerned” about when compared to other dangerous behaviors such as operating a vehicle while distracted by cellphones, speeding or getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, according to a new Pew Research Center poll. The survey, which looked at public opinion on traffic concerns, found a majority of Americans (82 percent) still regard driving while high on cannabis to be either a major problem (37 percent) or minor problem (45 percent) in their area. But respondents ranked it lowest among six behaviors included in the…

New York regulators are expecting $800 million in revenue from state-approved cannabis dispensaries by the end of the year, CNY Central reports. The figures, outlined during a meeting on Tuesday, are short of the $5 billion the state estimated when it legalized cannabis for adult use. Currently, the state is pulling in more than $24 million weekly from adult-use cannabis sales – far more than 2023 revenues when the state was battling lawsuits and working to shut down unlicensed operators. So far this year, the number of legal adult-use dispensaries opening in the state has outpaced 2023 openings. Comparatively, adult-use…

The Florida Chamber of Commerce has launched a website opposing Amendment 3 – which if approved by voters would legalize adult-use cannabis in the state. The website, flbizagainsta3.com, opens with a YouTube video of Chamber President and CEO Mark Wilson arguing against the reforms. “Just like pregnant pigs had no place in our state constitution decades ago, legalizing drugs should not be rammed into our foundational document just because one company can dump $100 million into an ad campaign. The risks far outweigh any potential benefits, and we urge all Floridians to stand with us in opposing this dangerous…
